Photo Album: 2. A Trip of Firsts May 2009

On the evening of May 4th, 2009, Cathy Huntington and I (Kim Boyer) began our journey of "firsts". Though I had traveled to Bali twice before to oversee construction of My Father's Home, this would be the first time I was to meet the children who had begun to arrive a month before. This was Cathy's first time to Bali. We brought six bags packed with medicine, vitamins, clothes, games, balls, books, etc. each weighing fifty pounds. We arrived in Bali on May 6th and were greeted by Tash, our Director, and Pastor Dar who helped us get through customs. We drove the two and 1/2 hours to My Father's Home and when we stepped out of the car we were surrounded and greeted by over thirty children who had eagerly awaited our arrival. I cannot begin to explain the overwhelming feeling of love that we felt from the children. We were speechless.

Over the course of our two week stay, we had the privilege of sharing in many "firsts". We were the first visitors to work with the children and stay in the cottage located on the same property of the children's home. My degree is in Recreation and I had the privilege of planning inside and outside activities teaching them for the first time how to play games, throw Frisbees, run relays, put together puzzles, play cards (Go Fish and Spoons), and overall just teach them how to have fun. If you have read the children's stories you already know that there was no time for play in their lives before coming to our home. One of my greatest joys came about five days into the trip after we had done activities for three or four days. I walked in during free time and spread out all over the living room floor were groups of children. Some were playing Candyland, some Chutes and Ladders, some Go Fish, some Spoons, and some were putting together puzzles. They had planned all of their play time themselves. During a trip I took with Tash and Dar to the capital city, we stopped at a hardware store and there were bottles of bubbles so we bought one for each of the children and had the joy of watching the children blow bubbles for the first time. Another day we made bracelets with their names on them and it was a big hit.

Cathy began using her skills as a dental assistant right away as our clinic room was used for the first time to examine all the children's teeth and assess their dental needs. It soon became apparent that all of them needed immediate dental work and some of the worst cases were in actual pain from toothaches. So while we were there, Tash set up their first visits to a dental clinic. Each day about ten children were brought in to the four dentists working there. Cathy was able to go on at least two of the trips to make sure the kids were getting the proper care. As a result of this, we set up their first medical and dental records for our clinic room. By the way, a trip to the dentist cost between $6 and $10. We were also able to teach the staff about the medicine we brought as well as simple first aid procedures.

We had the joy of sharing in the singing, teaching, and worship times the kids experience every day. I have never seen children worship like these children do. They really feel the love of Christ in their lives and it is evident as you will see in the pictures. The staff are doing a phenomenal job of loving them and teaching them how to love.

Just as we were the first to come, we were the first to leave. It is hard to describe the grief we felt as we had to say goodbye to these children we had played with, served, and loved. Tears flowed freely the night before we left. My husband, Brian, and I will return in October to spend a month and Cathy is already planning her next trip. Though this was our first time with the children, thankfully it will not be our last. We cannot wait to get back. I am including pictures that illustrate our times with these precious children. I hope you enjoy looking at them.
